Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Genre: Sci-fi, Action.
I cannot begin to count the ways that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever came through with the natural hair representation.
From Nakia’s gorgeous Bantu knots to the fierceness with which the Dora Mijaye rocked their big chops, all the way to the luscious protective hairstyles won by Queen Mother Ramonda, played by the gorgeous Angela Bassett.
But don’t take my word for it. Go watch the movie if you have not alreadt done so. And if you have, you can always re-watch it to enjoy the diversity of afro hairstyles.

The Love Birds (2020)

Can we first appreciate the way Issa Rae was giving us legs for days in this movie. She looked gorgeous and portrayed her fun character in her quirky way.
Not only is it one of our favourite romance comedies, but Issa Rae’s braids almost stole the show.
Definitely worth a watch!

Ahh, she of the big chop.

Movie trivia: Sanaa Lathan shaved her hair in real-time for this movie and she shared her growth journey on Instagram with her fans.
Sanaa’s storyline is a familiar one. After a tough breakup, she shaved her head as part of a dramatic journey of self-discovery.

Something New (2006)

Sanaa makes another appearance in one of our favourite romantic movies.
Tiny spoiler alert but her character had an aha moment and stopped wearing weaves and opted to wear her natural hair. While the hair she wore was not actually natural, we applauded the positive natural hair message that does not always find its way to the big screens.
Also, she had two hot love interests that kept the screen sizzling.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
Genre: Romance Drama
Angela Basset was superb in her role as the romantic lead and we all cheered for her when she found love in her 40’s, in all his chiselled abs glory.
Angela’s braids were styled effortlessly and we were rooting for her in all her protective styling glory.

Take the Lead (2006)

While Yaya Da Costa’s character was not the lead, she played a role that got some major screen time.
Her braids showed off her gorgeous face and we were blown away by how they were styled for the dance-off.
